12 Steps to Canning Green Beans Step 4, Put Bacon and Salt in empty Jars The day before canning beans we have cut up and fried bacon for flavoring the beans. We remove the bacon grease. On the day of the canning we put 1 tablespoon of bacon bits and 1-teaspoon salt in each empty jar prior to starting the beans. Both the bacon and salt is optional and not required if they are a problem for your health. Here Bernice has set up the table to fill the jars with beans after Paul has blanched them.
