Bracken Fern

Flowers Growing at Our Home

Bracken Fern

Pteridium aquilinum General: Fronds large, solitary, erect, deciduous, to 3 (sometimes) 5 meters tall; rhizomes spreading much-branched below ground surface, clothed with numerous hair. Leaves: Blades triangular, 2-3 times tripinnate, hairy. Ecology: Meadows, roadsides, clearings, sterile sandy soils, burns, avalanche tracks, dry to wet forests, acid sites such as lake shores and bogs; at low to subalpine elevations.

These ferns cover our area near the heat pump and the big circle area. They are nice in the summer, die off in the winter. We cut them to the ground and they spring up from roots in April. They grow to 4-6 feet in a dense cover.
