| alpine | Found above the timber line at high altitudes. | ||
| alternate | Arranged singly at different heights along the stem. | ||
| annual | Plant that germinates, flowers, seeds and dies in one year. | ||
| anther | Pollen-producing segment of the stamen. | ||
| armed | Has spines, prickles, or thorns to protect itself. | ||
| axil | The upward angle between the leaf and the stem. | ||
| basal | Found at or near the base of the plant or plant part. | ||
| beard | A clump of hairs. | ||
| biennial | Plant that completes its life cycle in two years. | ||
| bipinnate | Twice pinnate, leaflets again. | ||
| blade | The expanded part of the leaf. | ||
| brackish | Somewhat salty. | ||
| bract | 1. Small leaf-like structure associated with an inflorescence. 2. Small scale or leaf-like structure on a stem. | ||
| bractlets | Small secondary bract. | ||
| calyx | Whorl of sepals, the lowest or outermost part enclosing the rest of the flower. Often green or tan. | ||
| clasping | Holding or surrounding tightly, as in a leaf on a stem. | ||
| cyme | Branched inflorescence in which the central flower on the main stem opens before the side flower. | ||
