Skunk Cabbage (Yellow Skunk Cabbage, Swamp Lantern)

Lysichiton americanus - Locally common, early spring, perennial, 1-3 ft. Foul-smelling. Leaves appearing at flowers, egg-shaped, deep green, elongate to 1-2 ft. long and 3/4 as wide, overtaking the flower stalk, thick petiole graduating into thick midvein. Flowers yellow-green, numerous on sprout spike partly surrounded by very large yellow bract. Grows in tree-shaded freshwater swamps, marshes, wet edges of streams, from coast to low elevations.
