30. Noll Builds a Power Generator Bunker

All the time there are four motor generators running. This makes a lot of noise all the time. A tank could come up to our station and you wouldn't know it until they began to fire on you. Also because the generators are extremely hard to start in zero temperatures, we decided to build a bunker for the generators. Almost always construction projects fell into my responsibility. I hired a construction crew and came up with a plan I wanted to build. First I hired a labor crew. I had them dig a cut into the hillside. They then rounded up some good size rocks and built a wall on the downhill side. I located some large timbers from a destroyed factory and hauled them to our base camp. They were 20 foot 4 by 8 timbers. Koreans then carried them up the 10 miles trail to the top and I used them for the roof. Here I am with my Korean foreman resting after placing them into place. Next job was to put a roof on the timbers. After that I had them put a foot of sod on top of that for sound deadening and bomb protection. Canvas was placed over this. The stones were placed only with mud as mortar. We had no cement.
